The Center for Afterschool, Summer and Expanded Learning (CASE for Kids)
is an intermediary for afterschool. CASE for Kids, formerly the
Cooperative for After-School Enrichment, leverages community resources
and strengthens the capacity of the out-of-school time field. Services
benefit kids and happen before and after school, on weekends and during

Receive guidance for locating and submitting educational programs as best practices that produce positive student outcomes.
Alternative Certification for teachers or principals prepares aspiring degreed professionals to become either teachers or principals. The separate programs include mentoring and field experience.
Educator Professional Development
Professional development for educators is offered for multiple subject
areas through Instructional Support Services. Content area specialties
and venues include art, behavior management, bilingual education,
conferences for educators and customized curriculum training. Areas
include online learning, early childhood, gifted and talented, math,
science, social studies and special education. Services include educator
coaching, support and best practices through workshops at HCDE or in
The Research and Evaluation Institute at HCDE provides quality,
scientific-based evaluation services that meet the needs of HCDE, school
districts and other community groups. We can assist with human subjects
protection and institutional review board (IRB) needs.
Foundations and Alliances
HCDE is allied with several groups which provide services to the education public, including students, educators and community. These beneficial organizations include the Education Foundation of Harris County, the Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN) through the Texas Education Agency, the Academic Decathlon and the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Head Start, a federal program, empowers preschool children ages 3-5 and their families with school readiness skills. Low-income families and families of children with special needs benefit from services. HCDE administers the program locally in Head Start Area I for families residing in east and northeast Harris County.
HCDE specialists develop and deliver curriculum products to meet the needs for educators.
