Texas Senate Bill 25 - "Make Texas Healthy Again Act"

Texas Senate Bill 25, also known as the "Make Texas Healthy Again Act," promotes healthy living through a multi-pronged approach that addresses public health via food labeling, nutrition education, and physical activity. Effective September 1st, 2025, here's how it impacts schools:

Daily Physical Activity Mandate:

  • Full-day Pre-K through elementary students must participate in 30 minutes per school day of moderate to vigorous activity—either during physical education or structured recess.
  • Students in grades 6–8 must receive the same level of activity for the equivalent of four semesters, with alternative scheduling flexibility allowed for tight schedules.
  • Recess and physical activity may not be withheld as punishment for academic or behavioral reasons.

Nutrition Education Requirements:

  • The State Board of Education must adopt K–8 nutrition instruction standards aligned with recommendations from the newly formed Texas Nutrition Advisory Committee.
  • High schools must offer a ½ credit elective in nutrition and wellness using approved curriculum materials.
