Sept. 1: Labor Day

Celebrated on the first Monday of September to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements in the United States. Activity to do with students: Have the students write thank-you notes to school staff, cafeteria workers, custodians, bus drivers or their parents.

Sept. 3: Indigenous Literacy Day

Indigenous Literacy Day is celebrated annually on the first Wednesday of September and is a vibrant celebration that honors the rich stories, cultures, and languages of First Nations peoples. It raises awareness about the literacy challenges faced by remote Indigenous communities. Activity to do with students: Choose age-appropriate books by Indigenous authors. Invite local elders or community members to read and share traditional stories.

Sept. 4: National Wildlife Day

Celebrated on September 4th, this day recognizes endangered species, preservation, and conservation efforts around the world. Zoos, aviaries and marine sanctuaries are great places to visit and provide a variety of ways to get involved. Activity for youth: Take a guided walk and have youth write or draw what they observe—birds, bugs, plants, or animal tracks.

Sept. 6: National Read A Book Day

Bringing new worlds to life, books enlighten us and transport us on exciting adventures. Books can challenge our perspectives on the human experience in ways unmatched by other media. In a world deluged by technology, National Read a Book Day encourages us to silence the noise and turn the pages for a while.

Sept. 11: National Day of Service

Patriot Day and a National Day of Service and Remembrance honors and commemorates the sacrifices made that day by remembering the heroes, armed forces, first responders, and countless others’ acts of service to defend our nation’s freedom.
