The Outstanding Harris County Department of Education, Teacher of the Year Award is provided to a practitioner with three or more years of adult education teaching experience that participates in school and community activities. This award is given to an individual who understands the characteristics of the adult learner and who is committed to the adult/continuing education profession. The award will recognize 3 teachers in the areas of - HSE (High School Equivalency), ESL (English as a Second Language), and IET (Integrated Education and Training).
Eligibility
A current teacher with three or more years of adult education teaching experience.
Participate in school and community activities.
Communicates effectively with learners, colleagues, and supervisors.
Committed to the adult/continuing education profession.
Committed to his/her own lifelong learning (evidence of professional development).
Understands the physical, psychological, social, and cognitive characteristics of the adult learner.
Accepts the learner’s cultural and ethnic uniqueness.
Provides a non-threatening, supportive atmosphere for learning, which fosters freedom of thought and expression.
Assists learners in formulating personal learning objectives and assessing progress towards those objectives.
Uses the instructional methods, techniques, materials, and resources most appropriate for the learning tasks and characteristics of the adult learner.
Selection Process
Nominations are due no later than March 20th, 2023. No other nominations will be accepted past this deadline.
The nomination form may be used for multiple entries. All information should be supplied on the form, or if additional space is needed, a word-processed document should list the same section topic headings, with pages numbered sequentially.
The Adult Education Teacher of the Year Committee will nominate a winner based on the above criteria.
If there is a tie, a vote will determine who will progress to the next level.
The 2023 Adult Education Teachers of the Year will be announced on May 24, 2023.
